The first delivery of the Lockheed L-1011 took place in April 1972; Delta Air Lines received their first TriStar in October 1973. From then until the last Delta TriStar took its final flight in 2001, the airline would fly 70 of the wide-body tri-jet airliners and employ the largest L-1011 fleet in the commercial aviation industry. Delta was the only major airline to fly with the L-1011-1, -100, -200, -250, and -500 variants. The L-1011 was equipped with new technology such as an advanced navigation system that linked with the automatic landing system and autopilot, as well as the CAT-IIIB Autoland system that could perform a landing automatically, even in bad weather. Further, the TriStar offered better fuel efficiency in the midst of a fuel crisis during the 1970’s.
